Malinowski's work is a meditation on light, colour, and painting, exploring Dulwich Picture Gallery's historical connection with a Polish King.

The Collection


Dulwich Picture Gallery houses one of the world's most important collections of European old master paintings of the 1600s and 1700s. The collection is also one of the oldest in Great Britain. Ian Dejardin, Director and Xavier Salomon, Curator talk you through some of the rich paintings and a brief history of the gallery

Sickert in Venice:
Walter Richard Sickert was one of the most important British artists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Born in Germany and raised in England, he became known as the father of modern British art, having introduced Impressionism and Post-Impressionism to a younger generation of British painters.

The Petrobelli Altarpiece:
For the first time in over 200 years the surviving fragments of Veronese's Petrobelli Altarpiece will be reunited at Dulwich Picture Gallery.
Exhibition held: 10th February - 3rd May 2009

 

Illuminations:
Saul steinberg
Saul Steinberg was an American artist whose magic lit up the pages and covers of the New Yorker for six decades. Our winter exhibition is a retrospective which features more than a hundred drawings, collages and sculptural assemblages by the artist.

American Art 1850s to 1950s
From landscapes to abstract paintings over a period of one hundred years from 1850s to the 1950s, this exhibition focuses on the key movements during a period in which American art matured and took its place in the international arena.

  The Agony and the Ecstasy -
Guido Reni's Saint Sebastians
Xavier Salomon introduces Guido Reni's Saint Sebastians 'The Agony and the Ecstasy'. Xavier compares these six masterpieces discussing how they were executed and how Saint Sebastian has become an icon from the 17th to the 21st Century

  The Age of Enchantment
Beardsley, Dulac and their Contemporaries 1890 - 1930
Borrowing from the past, illustrators such as Aubrey Beardsley, Edmund Dulac and Kay Nielson had lavish colour plates published in children's books such as The Arabian Nights, which became the coffee table books for a new age.

  The Changing Face of Childhood
British Children's portraits and their influence in Europe.
British portraits of children by artists such as Van Dyck , Gainsborough, Reynolds and Thomas Lawrence inspired their great European counterparts changing the face of childhood forever.

  Artists' Self Portraits from the Uffizi
For the first time ever fifty outstanding art works from the Uffizi Gallery are on show in Britain. Ian Dejardin looks in detail at some of the portraits.
